Craters near the terminator are labeled, as are Apollo landing sites and maria and other albedo features in sunlight. Supplemental graphics show the Moon's orbit, subsolar and sub-Earth points and the Moon's distance from Earth at true scale. This wobble is called libration, from libra, the scale. When a month is compressed into 24 seconds, as it is in this animation, our changing view of the Moon makes it look like it's wobbling.
MOON THE HIDDEN FACE OF EARTH SERIES
The series of test images shows the fully illuminated dark side of the moon that is never visible from Earth. A NASA camera aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite captured a unique view of the moon as it moved in front of the sunlit side of Earth last month. Because of the tilt and shape of its orbit, we see the Moon from slightly different angles over the course of a month. From a Million Miles Away, NASA Camera Shows Moon Crossing Face of Earth. The Moon always keeps the same face to us, but not exactly the same face. If the Moons shadow falls on Earth, we get to see a solar eclipse the Earths shadow falling on the Moon results in a lunar eclipse. However, there are different types of solar and lunar eclipses. Phase and Libration 2022 (Southern Hemisphere View) 2022 phase and libration as viewed from the Southern hemisphere are available here: From there, an observer during an eclipse would see all Earth's sunrises and sunsets at once. This visualization shows the Moon's phase at hourly intervals throughout 2022, as viewed from the Northern hemisphere. This is because the only remaining sunlight reaching the Moon at that point is from around the edges of the Earth, as seen from the Moon's surface. This rotation coincides with its orbit around the Earth so that we only see about 59 of the surface of the Moon from Earth.
